Does this sound familiar?
You're in an immigration process and want to start working right away, but you don't have authorization. Waiting for your full case to resolve can take years, and employers need to see that you're legally authorized. A work permit lets you start working while your immigration steps move forward—as long as you meet the timing and category requirements.
What is Work Permit?
The work permit (EAD — Employment Authorization Document) authorizes you to work legally in the U.S. while your immigration process is ongoing. It's an essential document for many immigrants and can be filed independently or together with other processes.

PER PERSON — USCIS has no per-family fee: each permit (Form I-765) is filed and paid individually, per its official Fee Schedule (G-1055, ed. 05/29/26). The cost DEPENDS ON THE PERMIT TYPE: pick your category in the list above and you will see your exact total — from $0 (exempt categories) up to $1,080 (TPS or parole, first permit on paper). Some categories add a statutory fee (Pub. L. 119-21) that is paid separately and cannot be waived; the list already includes it in the total. Verified Aug. 2026 against the current G-1055.
